FACULTY Associate Professor Lauren Bruce joined the UAA faculty in 1990. She holds a BS and an MA in Communication and Fine Arts (Speech) from Southern Illinois University. Her areas of interest are interpersonal communication, small group communication, performance studies, and oral interpretation of literature. Professor Bruce currently serves as Director of the Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence (CAFE). Term Instructor Mark Bruner has a Master of Arts in Rhetoric and Communication from the University of California, Davis. He has been an adjunct instructor with the University of Alaska Anchorage since 1994, and has been a term assistant professor since Fall 2002. Mr. Bruner is responsible for all aspects of student instruction in Fundamentals of Oral Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Public Speaking, and Small Group Communication. Dr. Barbara Harville holds a BA in English Literature, and an MA in Communication Studies from California State University, Los Angeles, and received her Ph.D. in Communication through the University of Oklahoma, Norman. Her areas of interest are interpersonal communication, and communication and racism. Associate Professor Steven Johnson has been a member of the faculty at the University of Alaska Anchorage since 1995. He holds a BA in Speech Communication from Moorhead State University, and an MA in Speech Communication from Colorado State University. His areas of interest include argumentation theory and criticism, conflict resolution, and forensics. Professor Johnson serves as Co-Director of Forensics for the award-winning Seawolf Debate team. His primary responsibilities include coaching students for parliamentary debate and individual events, assisting in administration of the budget, designing travel schedule, representing UAA at regional, national and international conferences and tournaments, and team recruitment. Professor Doug Parry has taught communication courses at the University of Alaska Anchorage since 1981. He holds a BA in Communication and Political Science from the University of the Pacific, an MA in Communication Theory from West Virginia University, and a Ph.D. in Interpersonal Communication from Ohio University. His interests include organizational communication, forensics, interpersonal communication, health communication, and communication education. Dr. Marcia Stratton has been teaching at the University of Alaska since 1980 beginning at UAF and joining UAA in 1993. She holds a Bachelor of Science (Business), Masters (Education and Communication), and Doctorate (Communication). Her areas of interest are rhetoric and public address and culture, gender, and communication. Associate Professor Shawnalee Whitney has been teaching at the college level since the fall of 1986, and at UAA since the fall of 1995. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (double major in Speech Communication and Political Science) and Master of Arts (Speech Communication) from the University of Northern Colorado. She has pursued doctoral-level graduate work in Rhetoric and Communication at the University of Pittsburgh and in Communication Studies at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Her specialties in the communication discipline include communication and culture, rhetoric and public address, and forensics education. . ADJUNCT FACULTY Ronnie Arnett has a Master of Arts in Organizational Communications from Murray State University. She has been an adjunct instructor with the University of Alaska Anchorage since 2005. In addition to teaching at UAA, Ronnie has been an adjunct instructor with Wayland Baptist University and Central Texas College since 2003. Her area of expertise is Small Group Communication. Jo Gottschalk has been an adjunct faculty member in Communication at the University of Alaska Anchorage since 1992. Research areas of interest include: organizational communication, history of scientific communication, peer review, impact of new communication technologies, small group dynamics, public health communication. Master of Arts in Organizational Communication, thesis, specialty-Technology, Purdue University. (Organizational Communication-Purdue ranks #1 by NCA.) Concurrent, full-time Program Coordinator, State of Alaska, DHSS. Laurie Green received her Master of Arts in Interpersonal Communication from the University of Montana, and her MA in Speech Disorders from the University of Redlands. She has been an adjunct faculty member with the University of Alaska Anchorage since 1997, teaching at both the Mat-Su campus and the main campus in Anchorage. Ms. Green is responsible for all aspects of student instruction in Fundamentals of Oral Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Public Speaking, and Small Group Communication. Concurrent, full-time Speech-Language Specialist with the Mat-Su Borough School District. Michael Haller received his Bachelor of Science in Radio/Television/ Film from the University of Maryland. He is pursuing a Masters in Education, Adult Education, through the University of Alaska. He has been an adjunct instructor with the University of Alaska Anchorage since 1991, teaching classes for both the Department of Communication and Journalism. Major Haller is the Chief Public Affairs office for the Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. Dr. Linda Northey has a BS in Education from Emporia State University, an MA in English from Pittsburg State University, and an Ed.D. (Doctorate in Occupational and Adult Education) from Oklahoma State University. Before starting as an adjunct instructor at the University of Alaska Anchorage in spring 2007, she taught at the University of Houston-Victoria and at Rogers State University. Elizabeth Ware holds a Master of Arts in Theatre from Kent State University, and a BA in Communication and Theatre from the United States International University School of Performing Arts. She has been an adjunct instructor with the University of Alaska Anchorage since 1991, teaching in the Departments of Theatre and Communication. Ms. Ware is well known to Alaska audiences through her work at Cyrano's Off-Center Playhouse and at the Edward Albee Theatre Conference in Valdez.
